From October, 21 to 25th, the National School Bus Safety Week, organized by the U.S Department of Transportation, highlights a critical road safety issue : protecting children on their way to school. This campaign aims to raise driver awareness about respecting speed limits near schools and prioritizing school buses, the safest mode of transportation for students. According to a report by the NHTSA, between 2013 and 2022, 1,082 people lost their lives in school transportation-related accidents, averaging 108 deaths per year. Among the victims, 198 were school-aged children. These alarming figures hightlight the need to reinforce preventive and informative measures, particulary near schools.
School buses remain statistically the safest mode of transportation for schoolchildren. Howerer, accidents still occur, primarily due to reckless behavior by some drivers. From 2000 to 2022, 55 deaths were caused by drivers illegally passing stopped school buses, nearly half of whom (25) were pedestrians under 18.
