Deadly Road Accidents: Excessive Speed Still a Major Cause, EVOLIS Vision Radar Speed Sign, a Preventive Solution

Despite a slight drop in road fatalities during the first quarter of 2024, we continue to see a troubling number of deadly accidents on our roads. According to preliminary estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), road-related deaths decreased by 3.2% compared to 2023, but still reach 40,999. Among the leading causes, excessive speed remains a key factor, accounting for 29% of fatalities in 2022. In response, Elan City is mobilizing its educational device, the EVOLIS Vision radar speed sign, designed to curb speeding and promote road safety without the use of punitive measures.

Speeding, Risky Driving: Key Road Safety Statistics

NHTSA statistics highlight several factors contributing to fatal road accidents. Among these, excessive speed is one of the most alarming.

Excessive Speed: A Constant Risk

In 2022, speeding accounted for 29% of fatal accidents, resulting in the lost of 12.151 lives and over 300.595 injuries.

Speeding is particulary dangerous on secondary roads: 87% of these accidents occur ou non-interstate roads, often ill-suited for high speeds.

As speed increases, reaction time decreases, thereby elevating the risk of severe accidents.

Alcohol, Distraction, and Drowsy Driving

Other aggravating factors include impaired driving, which accounted for nearly 13,524 deaths in 2022 — roughly one death every 39 minutes. The lack of seatbelt use among 45% of drivers and 51% of front-seat passengers also worsens accident outcomes. Additionally, distracted driving, often caused by phone use and other activities, led to 3,308 fatalities, while drowsy driving is an increased hazard on nighttime journeys.

EVOLIS Vision Radar Speed Sign: A Solution to Reduce Speeding

In light of these findings, Elan City is committed to actively preventing speeding through the EVOLIS Vision radar.

This educational device helps raise driver awareness by displaying real-time speed, encouraging drivers to adjust their behavior accordingly.

On average, this radar reduces speeding by 20% wherever it is installed, serving as a constant reminder of safe driving practices.
